Competitions

The troop is now a regular performer in All Ireland competitions winning most of the Féile events in the 90’s and attending 13 of the last 15 years Melvins/Phoenixes. In recent years the troop have finished in the top 3 in the Phoenix and in 2009 won the All-Ireland Campcraft Trophy. Our County shield has always been seen as the biggest competition for us and we have been fortunate enough to win this 5 times since the year 2000.

3rd Cork Camp – The Highlight of our year

The troop camps are the highlight and they are "a must go" for anyone involved with the Troop. Our recent favourite campsites are Clonbur, Co. Galway, Gilwell, London, Birr, Offaly and Perros Guirce, France. Camp 2007 was held in Austria with 40 members attending from the troop. This was one of our biggest attendance on camp for well over 30 years.

Favourite Scouting Skill

We consider ourselves to be a camping troop and each year we try to get 25 nights or more under canvas. That's just how crazy we are.

3rd Cork, A Corner stone of Cork Scouting

3rd Cork Scouts has long been one of the corner stones for Cork scouting. The Troop boast “The Hut” as its base. The Hut is certainly the focal point for most of the activities and emotions of the troop.

The troop came about at the very beginning of the formation of the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland in 1930, while on a hike. The first and only troop at the time in Cork decided to evolve into more troops due its raising membership. It was decided that Cork scouting would break up into 6 troops and would be based across the city. Only the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Cork Troops survive from the starting six troops.

Over the years the troop has again grown and has been the father troop to many other famous Cork troops such as the 12th, 21st and 48th Troops. It is said that all the troops on the North side of the city that have green in their neckerchief stem from the 3rd Cork scouts.

The troop has always been based on its traditions and history, the highlight has always been its fortnight Camp every summer. The 3rd Cork Scouts have attended Camp every year since 1930 (with the exception of one year in 1956 due to the polo academic). The Scout troop has had many highly respected members with people like Sean Duggan, Paul Dennehy, Maurice O’Sullivan and of course Walter McGrath being both scouts and leaders with the troop.
